EWING - Gov. Chris Christie, in appearances on Good Morning America and the Today Show, said that major flooding is still expected and residents should stay inside to avoid being swept away by flash floods.

"The message to the people of New Jersey. It's really important to get through to get through for the people that are watching, George. Stay in your homes. Do not leave out of your homes," Christie said. "We had one report of a woman who left her home, got in her car, and has been taken away by water."

Among the details Christie provided:

  • 200 roads remain closed.
  • 400,000 residents are without power
  • 2,000 National Guard soldiers and airmen are standing ready to help in the aftermath.
  • 1 million people have been evacuated from the Jersey Shore.
  • 15,000 residents are in evacuation shelters.

Christie concluded with a hopeful message, even though he could not say when roads would be open and that he did not yet know the full extent of the damage.

"I'm optimistic about the fact that New Jerseyans are tough, gritty people. After the storm passes, and we assess the damage, everyone will work to bring life back to normal," he said.
